Tiny Tables

I always say that good things come in small packages – a diamond ring, a box of Belgian chocolates or an iPod loaded with your favorite music. Tables are the same way - the tiny ones, which we call drinks tables -  don’t take up much space but they can be a visual bombshell! Drinks tables measure under 20 inches, and some are as small as 6 or 8 inches across, just big enough to hold a cup or glass – the in-home version of a cup holder in your car. These tiny tables give us permission to be whimsical, colorful, quirky or extravagant without overdoing it. They are like the pretty garnish on a dish from a Michelin-star restaurant – miniature works of art to tantalize our senses.

This airy, black and gold table rounds out a cozy reading nook with its comfortable chair and cuddly throw. The open metal work lightens its profile.

When I saw this table it reminded me of a woman wearing a bright yellow scarf with a simple white shirt and linen ankle pants. Tiny tables next to a chair can dress them up or dress them down, and this one is big enough for a glass of wine, a cell phone and a bowl of peanuts – that’s a lot of function for a few square inches!

Talk about quirky and fun! These intergalactic, shiny brass tables look a little like alien butlers, at your service. The littlest one is just 8 inches across and they weigh only 12 pounds, total!

It’s almost a shame to put anything on this exquisitely tiny table. It is filled with flowers meticulously painted and gold-leafed by hand in a technique called tole. It is definitely an heirloom-quality conversation piece, and only 12.5 – by 10-inches.

At Sweet Peas Design we often place a snazzy little drinks table at the end of a chaise. This galvanized bronze version is angled so it reaches over the chaise, which makes it a handy spot for a laptop while you’re multi-tasking in front the TV!

Doesn’t this chair look like it’s wearing a piece of jewelry? Well, almost! The piercing blue agate rivets our attention on this marble-topped and steel framed side table.

As you can see, tiny tables aren’t always for drinks. This cinched-center table is handy for holding a towel in the bathroom, and we love the texture and sparkle of the crackled gold finish.

Yes, we recommend trying this at home! Sometimes you have to think small in order to make a big impact.
