Fashion Memo For Spring- Seductive and Soft

March 25, 2014

I like to rationalize that when I’m paging through fashion magazines I’m actually working!

I like to rationalize that when I’m paging through fashion magazines I’m actually working! There is a strong connection between fashion and interior design, so I guess it isn’t too far-fetched. Here are ten trends – with some cross-overs into home design - that are calling to me this spring. That is if we ever have spring in Chicago!

1.  Fringe. Yep, I love cowboy boots and the men that wear them but fringe doesn’t have to say “Wild West.” Think “movement” instead. A soft wish or a slight breeze and it flutters and flirts. Of course it’s perfect for leather and suede. Embellish a window treatment or cornice with fringe, or update your wardrobe with a fringed skirt, top or bag.

2.  Snake skin.  We’re familiar with this fabulous textural leather for shoes, bags and belts but I’ve selected it for ottomans and wallpaper also!

3.  White and cream combo. Think of this as drama tempered by discipline. The shape of your clothing is more important than the color. The emphasis becomes lines and curves. The same is true for a white and cream interior- the shapes and textures draw you into the space.

4.  Chokers. No longer an outcast, these are perfect for off-the-shoulder necklines, and reminiscent of the wide tapes being seen on chair and sofa skirt corners.

5.   Laser-cut leather skirts and tops. I’m crazy for leather, although it costs a fortune to dry clean. It’s soft and durable, looks rich and feels great. Window treatments are getting into the act too, and why not! Laser-cut leather cornices are just as beautiful as a laser-cut sheath.

6.  Mule shoes. They can be sultry and make short legs look long. A fashion consultant once told me I could never buy another pair of mules because that was the only style I owned! So glad they are back in favor. I can pull out my old favorites…

7.   Bracelet watches. Such a fabulous combination. I love the oversized men’s watch faces. They make a much bigger statement yet can be a bit secretive, peeking out from under a shirt sleeve. Combine with other bracelets for an armful of fun.

8.  Slit skirts. You can have a slit cut up the front, back or side.  Most are very ladylike but with a sexy flash of leg. Show ‘em if you’ve got ‘em! Look for chair and sofa skirts to follow the trend.

9.  Drawstring bucket bags. One of the first bags I ever purchased was an ivory Dooney & Bourke hobo-like purse. It was my go-to while working corporately- a bit edgy and coveted by my more traditional peers!

10. Nude or barely there lips with the emphasis on smokey dark eyes… Most of the ladies on the red carpet had this look for the Oscars.
