Laundry, Mudroom Makeover – Before & After

Remember when laundry rooms were always hidden in a dark corner of the basement and the garage doubled as a mudroom? Today these much-used spaces are larger, bright, organized and efficient rooms that are getting the attention they deserve.In this project, the homeowners were building an addition and asked us to incorporate a generous laundry room and mud room where everyone would have some personal space - even the family cat and dog! Previously, the laundry room doubled as a mudroom, but this blended family had literally outgrown the space and needed more room to fold and hang clothes, increased storage for backpacks and an out-of-the-way home for the dog and cat crates.  Here are a couple of "before" shots.

With the extra space from the addition we created two rooms split in half with a hallway running between from the garage. On the laundry room side we chose deep cabinets that extend almost to the front of the washer and dryer to provide easy access to laundry soap, bleach and dryer sheets. To the right of the washer and dryer is a counter for folding clothes, a rod for hanging clothes, several drawers for storage and space for the cat crate.

On the opposite side we included a must-have farmhouse sink with cabinets and drawers, and a drop-down area with a handy clothes rack that pulls down from the wall.

Across the aisle in the mudroom – notice the sunny window – the family has plenty of storage room with cubbies and hooks for jackets  and sports equipment, and shoes tucked neatly away underneath the bench. (If you can train everyone to do that!)

On the opposite side is a roomy coat closet with space for suitcases, and below the counter, a cozy spot for the dog bed. Don’t you just love those round glass mosaic tiles on the backsplash too?

We think the whimsical, “bubbly” effect is perfect for a laundry room and mudroom, and so did NS magazine when it spotlighted them in our project.  http://sweetpeas-inspired.com/press/ns-magazine-spots-a-trend   At the end of the day, there’s a place for everything, and everything in its place, just like it should be!
