Northwestern University Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority House
Common Areas Meet Uncommon Design
Design No. 1871
Designing a home for a “family” of 70 college-age women plus a house mom was a challenge. All the work had to be completed in two months over the summer when the sorority house was empty. Flexibility, functionality and durability were the three primary goals for reimagining the living and study rooms. The Kappa Kappa Gamma colors, light blue and sapphire, were the inspiration for the color scheme with hints of coral. With dozens of women using the space for meetings, studying and just hanging out, extensive seating capacity was a must-have. Sofas in stain-resistant fabric formed a communal seating area, while side chairs in cheerful stripes and an extra-long window bench accommodate additional gatherings. Plenty of task lighting and floor outlets for tech devices were incorporated throughout. The KKG sisters were thrilled with a space customized to their sorority goals of “tradition, leadership, academics and friendship.”
