New Year’s Resolution: Be Spontaneous!

Have you ever heard people say that spontaneous gatherings are often the most successful? Well, that strategy certainly worked for me – finally!
Have you ever heard people say that spontaneous gatherings are often the most successful? Well, that strategy certainly worked for me – finally! I have been saying all year that I wanted to gather a group of fabulous women for an evening of cocktails and conversation, and I finally made that happen earlier this month with the help of my friend Liz Morgan. At the spur of the moment on a Monday night we each invited a group of women to meet us the next night at the Pump Room for drinks in the Library area.

I was a little surprised when fifteen very generous, stylish and accomplished women from a wide range of backgrounds showed up for a last-minute get-together that was lively and engaging. The group included an attorney, an art gallery owner, a personal shopper, a clothing designer and many marketers and entrepreneurs. The whole group was vivacious and outgoing. They are all connectors… comfortable with who they are. The conversation ranged from “what do you do?” to sharing life stories and adventures. To keep the ball rolling we changed seats periodically, kind of like Speed Dating without the awkward tension!
If you want to try this, I highly recommend a spot like the Library at the Pump Room. It’s posh and sophisticated, yet cozy and eclectic with an enormous limestone fireplace, pockets of sofas and chairs and a long conference table. In addition to a full bar with specialty cocktails you can order small plates and dessert from award-winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

People can come and go as their schedules permit and it’s perfect for a good chat. In fact, a younger group of women were meeting there as well, but we were having more lively discussions!I was so thrilled that so many women would stop in during the busy holiday season, and I have been reminded how important it is to be casual and spontaneous. As one of the women emailed us the next day, I for one, can’t wait for the next rendezvous! More fun is definitely on my list of New Year’s resolutions.
