Light fixtures often are last in line when people are updating their homes, but maybe it’s time to let those dated sconces and ceiling fixtures jump the line! After all, light fixtures are one of the most-used items in the house - we turn the on and off every day. And they are a key element in the design of a room, too – they contribute a lot to the warmth and mood to a home, so it’s worth updating them now and then. Here are some tips for lighting up your life:

Variety. We cannot emphasize this enough - light fixtures should not be all the same style and finish. One might be organic, or you could have pendants with a shade fixture, as above. They just need to work well together.

Harmony. If you’re only changing a few fixtures be sure to take into account all your other existing fixtures too, again so everything works together.

Look up! Still have those “boob” lights the builder installed on the ceiling in your back entryway, hallways and laundry room? You know what we mean! Flush mounts or ceiling mounts are easy to update and they deliver more design impact than recessed lighting but less pizzazz than a chandelier. We’re seeing a lot of really exciting options that will dress up these much-used areas in your house.

Get creative with wall sconces. They used to be seen only in pairs flanking a foyer door, bathroom mirror or dining room hutch. Today they have so much design character; we’re placing them everywhere – in niches, stairways and above built-in bookshelves. They can also be a design “bridge” from one chandelier to another in your home.

Lighting is a puzzle with a lot of pieces – you have to consider style, shape, color and size when a choosing a light fixture.  We love putting that puzzle together for our clients as so often lighting and especially sconces are forgotten!
